Phalaenopsis Orchid Care

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Without a doubt the most popular orchid is the Phalaenopsis orchid, otherwise known as the moth orchid. They are very common because they are relatively easy to look after relative to many of the other orchid types (of which I’ll talk about in future posts).

The fundamentals are all the same:

Watering

Unlike most other orchids the moth orchid likes to be a little moist, but that doesn’t mean you can over water. It simply means you can be a little more generous.

Temperature

Simple, avoid extreme hot or cold or extreme jumps between temperature. A moderate room temperature is perfect for these plants.

Lighting

They like a good amount of light but AVOID too much direct sunlight. Behind curtains or blinds is the perfect sot for them.

Righto, just a few quick tips on phalaenopsis orchid care today. I’ll be coming back soon with plenty more orchid care tips.

Orchid Watering

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Many people make the mistake of over watering their orchids. They don’t need to be watered continuously and doing so can severely harm their root system and lead to problems such as disease and root rot. Use the following as a guide for watering your orchids:

Water your orchid thoroughly once and then allow the media to try out before watering again. The top layer of the pot should be dry to the touch before watering the plant anymore. The trick is to water them enough, but not too much. This may seem like stating the obvious and it lots of ways it is, but its important to remember.

Another important factor is water quality. Rain water is by far the best option and is my recommendation. I try to avoid tap water because on a few occasions doing so has severely hurt my orchid.

Good luck with your orchid watering :)
